Worldviews. . .

I've been thinking quite a bit lately about how much our worldview influences how we think and act. The challenge with any field of study is to admit one's predispositions while reviewing evidences and ideas in order to give them a fair review before making a conclusion. Some hard it's quite hard to get around our preconceived ideas in order to allow this to happen. There's no real solution for this problem other than to be forthright, open, and humble when considering the ideas of others. We must also admit that not all presuppositions are bad ones, though they can negatively affect our ability to honestly appraise something.

Along the same vein, I've also realized how much easier it is to criticize the worldviews of others than to think hard about one's own ideas. We so often get side tracked from the "main thing" in our lives and elevate peripheral issues as if they were our top-priority. We are so consumed in our beliefs that we don't often think about whether or not they are true. This has certainly become a big problem within many stripes of evangelicalism nowadays. . . which brings me to my final reflection.

As I've been thinking about history and theology lately, it seems to me that so many movements that have shaped our thought in centuries past have been based upon an over-correction to some problem or challenge. Rather than addressing the problem with precision, the Church has often instead allowed the pendulum to swing to the complete and opposite side of the spectrum. On most peripheral issues, it seems to me that the truth is usually somewhere in between the extremes. Of course, that leads me back to my first reflection, where I must admit that since my worldview is often between some of these extremes, it is an easy conclusion for me to reach!

As I've been thinking about the current state of evangelicalism and some movements of internal "correction" that seem to be brewing, I'm certainly excited about the conscious efforts to do things better and get things right, I can't help but wonder if it will all end up in another over-correction to a problem causing the pendulum to swing again in an unnecessary direction.

Just my musings for the day. . . adieu!
