An interesting thought came to mind tonight which has been developing for a little while now. In his The Drama of Doctrine, Kevin Vanhoozer discusses what he terms as "Theo-Drama," the recognition of revelation as the speech and act, or speech-act, of God which is dramatically participated in by his people through a reading and response to the canon (i.e. canonical-linguistic).
What stimulated my thought was his discussion of the OT and NT themes of exile and exodus, which we often ascribe primarily to the OT, but seem to have some important implications for how we understand the NT in a canonical fashion. What he added to what has seemed to me like a consistently repeating pattern (though not necessarily sequential) of exodus and exile was the concept edification (i.e. in terms of building up - garden, tabernacle, temple, Jesus, church, etc.). This seems to me to represent a very far reaching categorization of the events in the OT and NT - exile, exodus, and edification. I hope to flesh this out at some point, but something interesting to ponder for now...
